Morning Tree Glow

copyright 2008 Hannah Phelps
oil on canvas, 5" x 7"

Not much sunshine today, but the snow is still fun to paint. The sun doesn't rise high in the sky these days, but it does glow against the branches of the trees as it peeks through the flake-heavy clouds. More snow, and therefore snow paintings, on the way!

Ripening Lemons

copyright 2008 Hannah Phelps
oil on canvas, 7" x 5"

I have a lemon tree and these are my first "crop". I decided to paint them before we eat them! We also received a box of oranges and grapefruit as a
Christmas gift, so maybe some of those will be "models" as well.

More Winter Shadows

copyright 2008 Hannah Phelps
oil on canvas, 5" x 7"

I can't resist painting snow on a sunny day! This is a different section of the rock wall I painted yesterday, done a little later in the day.

First Snow Shadows-SOLD

copyright 2008 Hannah Phelps
oil on canvas, 5" x 7"

This is a painting of my backyard. I have painted this rock covered with snow about a dozen times in past winters, and it still captivates me. In the summer, this rock isn't even visible from my house since it is hidden by blackberry brambles. Capturing snow is a great change of pace for painters-the colors are completely different and we can see deep into the woods without leaves in our way.

The last plein air painting of the year?

copyright 2008 Hannah W Phelps

Early December Waves
oil on canvas, 6" x 8"

I painted this earlier in the month in York, ME. While it was quite cold that day, I didn't know at the time that it could be my last plein air painting of the year. "Plein air" basically means that this little oil sketch was painted outside and on-site, which is my favorite method of working. I do paint outside in the winter, but not while it is actively snowing, as has been the case for the past three days!

Summer Day at the Farm
oil on canvas, 8" x 6"

...but I wanted to remember how hot is can be here in New Hampshire before Mother Nature smothers us in the snow that is on its way. I am ready to paint outside this winter, so I will share some snow paintings soon.

Big Water-SOLD

copyright 2008 Hannah Phelps

Big Water
oil on canvas, 6" x 8"

Even though it is grey and gloomy outside today, I thought I would share a beach painting. This is from a day of big waves-even the foam is big! Painting this brought back childhood memories of late August beach days when we knew there was a hurricane off the coast. The huge storms warmed the water and sent us large powerful waves, creating a perfect playground.
