A few years ago I spent a few days painting on Appledore Island, one of a group of islands off the coast of the Maine and New Hampshire border known as the Isles of Shoals. It rained quite a bit during my stay, but I painted as much as I could, sometimes settling for the view out the windows of the lab building we artists were using as a studio. This gull might have been sick of fighting the weather as well, since he huddled up near the window long enough for me to paint him.

Here are some rocks from my favorite bit of coastline in Rye, NH. Since I grew up spending summers there, these channels, tide pools and rock formations feel like old friends. Sometimes, these little scenes feel more to me like portraits than landscapes.

This is the view from the studio of a friend of mine in Kittery Point, Maine. On this first day of spring, I traveled out to the coast with another painting buddy, and the three of us had a really great day painting together for the first time in months. I hope that it is the first of many painting dates this year. It was especially nice to make sure I remembered where all my plein air equipment was. The most remarkable thing was that I didn't forget anything! That almost never happens, even in the middle of the painting season when my bag is always packed and ready to go.
Happy Spring Everyone!

Recently, I celebrated my birthday with a chocolaty cake that my sister brought to me. This isn't that cake-it didn't last long enough to be the subject of a painting...
This cake was presented to me and my sister by my husband after we cross-country skied over 40 kilometers last Sunday! A few months ago, we set a goal to ski the 24+ mile route, and it was quite satisfying to tackle and beat the course. While we were quite proud of ourselves, we were also a little tired and sore and agreed that we probably deserved cake!

I know that I said I had "returned home" from Australia, but I felt like painting the Great Ocean Road again. Maybe that is because it isn't quite time to visit the coast of New Hampshire to paint our rocks and water quite yet. It will be soon, however, I can almost smell it...

I was reminiscing about my autumn hike up Mount Monadnock again. This is hopefully the study for a larger piece of this scene. I also plan to paint some different compositions from the same hike as well. Then again, there is still quite a bit of snow on the ground here, so more snow paintings might show up on the blog soon...

Here is another painting of Striper and Winnie. It is funny that even when provided with a whole ocean, they swim right next to each other, sometimes touching!

Within days of returning home from Australia, I brought home our newest puppy, Hatrick. When we told her about our trip to visit her auntie and our friends, she decided that she wanted to meet them all by digging her way there! The many feet of snow on the ground at the time did not deter her at all.
This is Hatrick's debut as a model for a painting. We both hope it is a long career for her!
